Fed: Gay activists say PM's out of touch on same-sex marriage
Gay activists have condemned the federal government's opposition to same-sex marriagesand say it's not in tune with community opinion.
Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group spokesman RODNEY CROOME says he believes themajority of Australians supported legal equality for same-sex couples.
He says excluding gay and lesbian people from marriage is just as reprehensible asexcluding women from the vote or making black people ride at the back of the bus.
Mr CROOME says the purpose of marriage is to recognise and reinforce values like love, commitment and support -- and heterosexual couples don't have a monopoly on these.
Yesterday, Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD ruled out any move to legalise gay marriages, saying marriage was about raising children and providing for the survival of the species.
